The French Research Institute on East Asia (IFRAE/FRE2025) was inaugurated on January 1, 2019, and is affiliated with the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilisations (Inalco), the University of Paris and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).
IFRAE was created by the merger of two laboratories: ASIEs & the Centre for Japanese studies (CEJ), both part of Inalco, joined by several lecturers and researchers from the University of Paris (previously called University Paris 7 Diderot).
Counting 65 lecturers and researchers, as well as 90+ doctoral and postdoctoral students, it is one of the largest research centres on East Asia in Europe.
